Finding 002

Who makes the main-branch commits of the self-hosted alternatives we list

In 11 of the 40 self-hosted alternatives we list that had main-branch commits in the last 12 months, one person made more than half of those commits.

One committer can have a company behind them, and commits are not hours of work.

Read 2026-10-20 from GitHub; refreshed monthly.

Not measured: code quality, security, or how quickly anyone answers issues. These are GitHub's own commit statistics, not a quality score.

Independence

BenchLytix takes no money from vendors or projects, including those named here, and none paid for a place on this page.

The 11 projects

Projects where one person made more than half of the main-branch commits in the last 12 months, highest share first. A high share can mean one company or one lead maintainer drives the project. It does not by itself show how well the project is looked after. Each project links to its record in the replacement finder and to the goals it fits there.

Two other maintenance signals we read

What the README says

  • Cal.diy Not for production (per its README)

“It is strictly recommended for personal, non-production use.”
    Its README, reviewed 2026-10-19.
  • Huly Not maintained (per its README)

“This repository is frozen and is no longer actively maintained.”
Its README, reviewed 2026-10-19. It names Platform-Collective/platform as where development continues.
  • Papercups Maintenance mode (per its README)

“Papercups is in maintenance mode. This means there won't be any major new features in the near future.”
    Its README, reviewed 2026-10-19.

No commit to the main branch in 365 days

  • Papercups: last commit to master on 2022-05-10.

How we read these

  • The projects are the self-hosted alternatives the replacement finder lists today: published records, leaving out any whose repository is archived (41 today). Every number on this page is worked out from the stored facts when the page loads, never typed in.
  • Commit share comes from GitHub's contributor statistics for each repository's default branch (the main branch) over the last 12 months. GitHub credits each commit to its author. A project is counted when its most active person made more than half of the commits made by people.
  • Bot accounts are left out by name (Dependabot, Renovate, GitHub Actions, Weblate, Crowdin, and any account ending in [bot]). Commits not linked to a GitHub account count as one author but never as the most active one. We store no account names and name no one.
  • GitHub's contributor list stops at 500 people. Where it stops, the most active person's share is only an upper bound. A project whose bound is above half could be over or under half, so it is left out of both the count and the total; one whose bound is at most half is counted in the total only.
  • README warnings count only when a person has read the flagged sentence in context and the README still says it. The main-branch date is the latest commit to the default branch; 365 days without one is the finder's inactive rule.
  • The facts are re-read from GitHub every month and this page changes with them. How we read maintenance facts.
▸What the count leaves out
  • No main-branch commits by people in the last 12 months, so not in the count: Papercups.
  • GitHub's contributor list stops at 500 people, and it did for Grafana, n8n, PostHog, Rocket.Chat and Zulip. Their shares are upper bounds, and each is at most half even so, so they are in the total and not in the count.

Read before quoting

  • What these numbers are: GitHub's own commit statistics for each project's main branch over the last 12 months, read 2026-10-20, and the projects' own README words.
  • What they are not: A quality score, a security rating, or hours of work. A commit share is an association between a project and how its commits are made, not a cause of anything; one committer can have a company behind them.
  • Left out: Work outside the main branch's commits (other branches, reviews, issues, releases, documentation sites), the people or companies behind an account, and commits GitHub could not link to an account beyond one shared bucket.
